As Kiama Council prepares for a new term amid significant financial challenges, it is crucial that our local government is equipped to meet the demands of 21st-century urban development. The recent decision by Councillors Kathy Rice and Jodi Keast to step down underscores the need for experienced and financially savvy candidates.
Kiama is grappling with substantial financial pressures, making effective management essential.
Modernising infrastructure, addressing affordable housing, and implementing environmental sustainability initiatives all require robust financial oversight. For example, the house price to wage ratio in Sydney has soared to 1:14, illustrating the housing affordability crisis. This means that if an average house costs $1.4 million, the average annual wage is only $100,000. In contrast, 30 years ago, if the average house cost $100,000, the average annual wage was $25,000. This shows how much more difficult it has become for new buyers to afford homes, making it nearly impossible without significant financial help or sacrifices.
Given these challenges, council candidates with experience in managing multi-million-dollar businesses are better positioned to navigate financial complexities. They bring expertise in budget management, financial forecasting, and strategic planning.
When local councils struggle with severe financial and administrative challenges, appointing an administrator becomes not just an option, but a necessity. An administrator provides essential oversight, taking charge of day-to-day operations and bringing specialised expertise in finance and planning. They ensure impartiality, serving the entire community rather than any specific group, and act as a critical communication bridge between officials, staff, and the public. Given the financial challenges highlighted by outgoing Councillor Jodi Keast, including the precarious financial position revealed in January 2022, Kiama Council must consider all options to ensure effective governance and stabilise its financial situation.
Ensuring the right leadership, whether through experienced council members or an appointed administrator, is vital for Kiama to navigate its financial challenges and work towards a sustainable, prosperous future for all residents.
