Could you have a fortune in your pocket?

As cash transactions dwindle, collectors are eyeing coins with potential value.

Sydney gears up for an auction showcasing rare coins and other historical artefacts next week. From 8-12 April, The Noble Numismatics Sale 135 will be held at the State Library in Sydney and online and will feature live bidding. A great day trip for coin enthusiasts in Kiama.

Jim Noble, the Managing Director of Noble Numismatics, highlights the value in old coins, especially those that predate Australia’s switch to decimal currency in 1966.

Coins that have been created with mistakes make them rare and valuable, and many collectors seek these ‘mistrikes’ worth hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars.

Among the treasures on offer, an Elizabeth II 50 cent piece from 1978, struck on a 20-cent blank is expected to fetch $1500. Another piece is an Elizabeth II ten-cent piece from 1994, struck on a five-cent blank, may draw bids that exceed $1000.

The auction will also include historical artefacts such as banknotes and medals. With a pair of 1913 ten-shilling banknotes valued at $100,000 and NSW’s first coinage from 1813 with an estimated value around $120,000 will be included
