Kiama Council is moving to address a fire compliance issue identified in Stage 5 of the Blue Haven Terralong retirement village, following the discovery of construction deficiencies during refurbishment works.
The issue came to light earlier this year when contractors renovating three units in Stage 5 identified problems in the internal cavity walls that rendered them non-compliant with current fire safety standards.
An independent fire safety engineer was subsequently engaged to assess the situation.
While Kiama Council insists the building remains safe to occupy, residents have approached The Bugle in recent days expressing concern - both about the impact of potential remediation works and the fact they will be relocated - which is very upsetting to them.
“There's a few of us who have invested in our futures being here and now we're being told to move out," one resident said on the condition of anonymity.
"We had just moved in and now we're having to relocate."
Some residents have also voiced concerns about the impact on neighbouring buildings, particularly given that the former Havilah Place nursing home - adjacent to Stage 5 - is due to be demolished in the near future.
In a statement issued on Friday, Mayor Cameron McDonald confirmed that Stage 5 of Blue Haven Terralong is the only part of the facility affected. Stages 1 through 4 have been reviewed and deemed compliant.
“This is not an evacuation or emergency situation,” he said. “The safety of residents and staff is our priority, and we’re working with independent fire consultants and authorities to ensure Stage 5 is brought up to standard.”
Council is expected to issue a formal Fire Safety Order and has pledged to carry out any required remediation works based on expert advice.
“We understand that any mention of fire safety can raise alarm, and that’s why we’re being transparent and proactive,” Cr McDonald said.
Council has begun direct communication with Stage 5 residents and staff and says it will continue to provide updates as plans for the works are finalised.
The Blue Haven Terralong facility has been part of the Kiama community for decades, offering independent living for older residents. The current issue is not related to the recent sale of Blue Haven Bonaira, which is a separate aged care facility operated by Council.
